死記硬背 (sǐ jì yìng bèi) can be understood as "remembering something using mindlessly and mechanical recitation". Despite its negative connotation, this approach has been central to learning Chinese characters (漢字, hànzì) and classical texts for Chinese grade schoolers. By emphasizing repetition, it strengthens memory and allows for efficient recall. Our stance is that rote learning can form a key pillar for language acquisition when it is combined with critical thinking and creativity, with emphasis on understanding. By internalizing essential vocabulary and grammar structures, learners can focus on nuanced expression to advance language mastery.
